Project Light
Shared Vision is an exhibition of commissioned works from sighted, partially-sighted and blind artists.
The exhibition, part of Project Light, considers how stories of vision, or lack of it, can affect and transform people’s lives.
The collective works aim to generate empathy between non-sighted and sighted audiences regarding how visual art is perceived.
In this short film Bahia Shehab is highlighting Egypt’s “Light and Hope” an all blind women orchestra, founded in the 1950s. In the video the orchestra is playing a classical piece, specifically selected by Shehab, by Sayyed Darwish (1892 –1923) , a prolific Egyptian composer. At first glance, the women seem fragile, however the minute they sit down at their instruments and start playing, they turn superhuman. “Light and Hope” are the only all women orchestra in the world that plays without a conductor.
